![]() Rather, rhinos work together under the leadership of an alpha-male (or alpha-female) to hunt down opportunities, together. But, in the professional world-just as in the jungle-going it alone isn’t the rhino way. Of course, honing your talents, honoring your values, and holding fast to your ethics are keys to living a successful life that cannot be delegated to someone else. ![]() As King Solomon, one of the greatest-and wisest-rhinos of all time once said: “As iron sharpens iron, so one man (or woman) sharpens another!” - Proverbs 27:17 So find a pack of thick-skinned rhinos to run with! Every successful business man and woman I know is successful precisely because they either built a team of rhinos or joined a team of rhinos. Only by living and working with a pack mentality can you actually become a three-ton snorting rhino ready to charge. Let me be clear about this: rhinos don’t hunt alone. Though the book largely paints rhinos as independent go-getters that have left their “cow” friends and coworkers behind, in actuality, rhinos are the best in the business at relying on those around them to meet their ambitious goals and at LEADING others to like-minded results. While the secret sauce for finding the courage and strength to wake-up a rhino is different for each of us, I found-and continue to find-that courage and strength through my faith, my family, and my interest in helping others. While the book’s metaphor isn’t perfect, and the world is not as black-and-white as Alexander paints it to be, Rhinoceros Success communicates a simple but powerful message: you can do anything if you believe you're capable and are willing to charge with everything you have. ![]() Why do you think cows and sheep are not found in the jungle? They couldn’t survive.” - Scott Alexander, Rhinoceros Success “As a rhinoceros, you are always on the alert. Who shower briskly, brush their horns quickly, and dress in their rhino garb to charge into jungles teeming with opportunity. In reading Rhinoceros Success, you will find a like-minded community of success-driven professionals who “get out of bed like a rhinoceros-not a sloth!” (Alexander). And I would submit that if your career is in sales or leadership, it’s not the pace for you either! If you really want to be a top loan officer or leader, you have to pin the pedal to the metal and roar down the highway because there’s always more in store for the daring! Be willing to dare to want more, to believe you are capable of more, and to charge after it with everything you have! And although I certainly have made my share of mistakes, have missed opportunities, and still have not “arrived,” living with purpose and an indomitable spirit has changed everything!Īnd while there’s nothing wrong with settling per se, I knew that wasn't an option for me. Sadly, I meet so many people in business today who are happy to coast through their lives and careers on cruise control, never really achieving their God-given potential or destiny. Thanks to his wisdom, for years I have charged forward with a gusto (or, as my wife puts it, a “peppiness”) that has led to both a very fulfilling career and life. My connection with Alexander’s playful but powerful world of cows (the average) and rhinos (hard-charging visionaries) was both instantaneous and refreshing. ![]() All I had to do was see the opportunities and be audacious enough to seize them, to quote my friend Scott! It changed my life, helped launch my career, and convinced me to wake-up a three-ton beast with horns and “2-inch thick skin” built for hunting down opportunities in a relentless pursuit for success in my life, faith, and career.įast forward 33 years and now, as a professional mortgage speaker, trainer and consultant, I’ve been blessed with countless opportunities over the years to better my life and others’. I am proud to be a rhinoceros! When I started my career in sales at age 20 as a pots-and-pans peddler, I had the great fortune of reading Scott Alexander’s classic book, Rhinoceros Success.
